San Diego County Behavioral Health Services (BHS)

The Behavioral Health Services (BHS) Division provides mental health and alcohol or other drug services for children, youth, families, adults, and older adults.   BHS promotes recovery and well-being through prevention, treatment, and intervention, as well as integrated services for clients experiencing both mental illness and alcohol or other drug issues. Services are offered through contracted providers and County-operated facilities.   The Division embraces   Live Well San Diego,    the County’s over-arching initiative to promote healthy, safe and thriving communities throughout the County of San Diego.

Edgemoor provides 24 hour long term skilled nursing care for individuals having complex medical needs who require specialized interventions from highly trained staff.

Heartland BPSR Wellness Recovery Center is a Bio-Psychosocial Rehabilitation program of Community Research Foundation that provides integrated, coordinated community-based psychosocial rehabilitation services for adults 18 and older who have serious mental illness, as well as individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance disorders.

Program Description

Heartland BPSR Wellness Recovery Center's services are based on the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation, with emphasis on attending to the whole person and re-establishing one's life as a result of the consequences of mental illness, rather than simply attending to the symptoms of the illness.  The services focus on recovery, rehabilitation, and community integration, and are individualized to meet the needs of each client.  Clients actively participate in setting service plan goals and are encouraged to involve family and significant others in the recovery plan.

McAlister Institute provides a comprehensive range of substance abuse treatment, recovery, and supportive services. Together, McAlister Institute’s 25 programs represent a continuum of care that spans prevention and education, outreach, intervention, outpatient treatment, short-term and long-term residential care, aftercare, and sober living. Recovery Innovations creates opportunities and environments that empower people to recover, to succeed in accomplishing their goals, and to reconnect to themselves, others and meaning and purpose in life. 
Programs
  • Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) helps people, who live with mental health challenges, develop a personal WRAP that will meet their recovery needs in eight class sessions.  
  • WELL Classes address finding and continuing wellness in all aspects of daily life.  The curriculum consists of 15 class sessions that use a holistic approach to promote mental, physical, social, financial, spiritual and general wellness. 
  • Medication for Success: Four classes covering the Recovery Pathways, identifying symptoms, side effects and big feelings, managing side effect, talking with your doctor to become a partner in your care.
  • Creating Healthy Habits: Five session class to explore and have conversation about those things we already do that have a positive impact on many areas of wellness.
  • Peer and Family Training: Peer Employment Training is for people with lived experience of recovery to work in the service system as a peer support specialist. Employment Coordinators help provide employment support to graduates including an advance training for advocacy and becoming a Peer Specialist.
  • Peer Liaison Services program assists people to advocate for their needs and rights.  
  • Certificates upon completion of training.
